DIY RV Toilet Repair: Replacing the Vacuum Breaker

Not all problems lead to disasters…unless you let them go unattended! The longer you are an RVer the more you learn…this was true for us with our RV toilet repair. Recently we started to notice some condensation on the floor behind our toilet. This soon became drops, which evolved into a small puddle. At first, we thought it was just condensation forming on the water supply line. But further  inspection revealed it was a leak coming from a contraption affixed to the back of the toilet, the vacuum breaker.

Tires, Age And Speed

Too many RVers out there think that driving the posted speed limit or more is something done without worry…UNTIL they feel the pain of the cost of repairs and inconvenience.

Not long ago, we were trekking across West Texas along the Interstate. It was a beautiful day except that it was WINDY with STRONG GUSTS. Combine the wind with stretches of roadway that were rougher than a corn cob and it makes for some challenging driving. We were cruising at a conservative 63-65 mph when I was passed by a fellow RVer pulling a 5er who was doing about 75 mph. Now keep in mind the posted Speed Limit on this stretch is 80 MPH. I wasn’t surprised to see this, it happens all the time.

RV Driving Tips: Pre-Departure Inspection

The importance of performing a pre-departure walk around inspection of your rig cannot be stressed enough. This is one of the first RV driving tips we ever heard on the Living the RV Dream podcast, which was a staple of our weekly schedule before we hit the road. Yet as important as this is for your SAFETY and PREVENTION of potential damage,  so many RVers still just jump in and drive.

How I Fixed Our RV Convection Microwave Oven

Living on the road without an RV convection microwave oven becomes a real challenge, not only when a park has insufficient power to run it safely, but even more so when it’s kaput! Earlier this summer ours started acting funny. It would run for 59 seconds then quit, but would resume for another 59 seconds if you pushed the start button again.

A little online research provided the reason our Sharp RV convection microwave oven was acting this way. A simple replacement of a failing part would fix it. No problem; I found the part online and ordered it. Within a couple of days the part arrived and it would be a simple task of removing the oven from where it was mounted above the stove. Once removed all I would have to do is take off the shroud covering the internal workings and swap out the offending part.

Summer Travels 2015

It was a crazy summer of RV travel. Five weeks in Wisconsin at the Omro RV Park flew by in the blink of an eye, and then a new travel schedule began in earnest. Our first major business commitment of the season began July 14 – exhibiting at the HobbyTown National Convention in Lincoln, Nebraska on behalf of a longtime client. One week later, we again represented our client at the four-day IPMS National Convention in Columbus, Ohio. Our next big engagement was in Portland, Oregon, where we represented two separate companies at the National Train Show, which began August 28. We put on about 4,200 miles in six weeks.
